Why Workplace Accommodations are a Tool, Not a Favor
In many corporate environments, the word "accommodation" is treated with a certain level of hesitation. There is a lingering misconception that asking for an adjustment to your work environment is asking for a "special break" or an unfair advantage.
At Sage & Focus, we view accommodations differently. For a neurodiverse employee or someone managing a chronic illness, an accommodation is simply a tool that allows them to do their job effectively. It’s the difference between fighting against your environment and working with it.
The Reality of the Neurodiverse Brain
For those of us with AuDHD, the standard office setup is often designed for a very specific type of brain—one that can filter out background noise, sit still for eight hours, and jump between tasks without friction.
When we don't have the right environment, we aren't just "distracted"; we are often in a state of sensory or cognitive overload. Accommodations like noise-canceling headphones, flexible start times, or written instead of verbal instructions aren't "nice-to-haves." They are the baseline requirements for us to access our actual skills and expertise.
Navigating Chronic Illness at Work
The same logic applies to chronic illnesses like Endometriosis. A flare-up doesn't care about a meeting schedule. If the only way to work is to sit at a specific desk in a specific office, a person in pain is forced to choose between their health and their paycheck.
When we advocate for accommodations like remote work or "core hours," we are ensuring that talent isn't lost simply because a physical body needs a different setting for a few days.
Why This Matters for the Business
We often work with clients who feel guilty about asking for what they need. We remind them (and their HR departments) that accommodations are a massive win for the company:
Higher Retention: People stay where they are supported.
Increased Productivity: When an employee isn't spending 50% of their energy trying to "act normal" or ignore pain, that energy goes directly into their work.
Reduced Burnout: Accommodations prevent the "crash" that leads to long-term leaves of absence.
Our Approach at Sage & Focus
We don't just tell you that you deserve support; we help you identify exactly what that support looks like for your specific brain and body. We believe that when the friction of the environment is removed, your focus returns.
In future blogs, we will be sharing a variety of menus of what these accommodations actually look like in practice so you can start identifying what might work for you.
